‘WANT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH CONTENT-DRIVEN CINEMA’
Irrfan feels the sensibility of the Indian audience is changing and Bollywood should cater to it
Actor Irrfan says his involvement with films that aren’t out-and-out commercial is a conscious decision because he feels that the Hindi film audience has evolved.
“Content-driven cinema has been going on for some years now. It was started by the audience,” says Irrfan.
“The footfall in cinemas for mainstream Hindi movies is falling. The audience is showing more interest in watching Hollywood or Indian regional cinema. And these films are doing better business because audiences are able to relate to them, and are entertained by them,” says the actor.
Irrfan feels that audience can no more relate to generic cinema of Bollywood. He says, “Hindi cinema was so generic till now that it lacked the relatability. The audience started to ask a simple question, ‘If Hollywood and regional cinema can do it, why can’t Bollywood come up with films which we can relate to?’” To illustrate the shift in the audience’s choice, the actor referred to actor Rajkummar Rao’s movies. “Rajkummar’s two movies did so well without any expectations. It is because the audience has evolved,” he explains.
