“State gov­ern­ments’ re­new­able en­ergy agen­cies will dis­burse the sub­sidy com­po­nent,” an of­fi­cial said.

Un­der the scheme, the feedin tar­iff — what a dis­com pays a house­hold for the power gen­er­ated by it and fed into the grid — and the con­sump­tion tar­iff will be the same. Dis­coms will not be able to refuse so­lar power from its con­sumers, min­istry of­fi­cials said.

The gov­ern­ment be­lieves the sys­tem will at­tract both con­sumers and dis­coms as prices of so­lar pan­els have halved in the last few years and there would not be any ex­tra fi­nan­cial bur­den on the com­pa­nies “The sec­tor has huge po­ten­tial and we want to tap it,” said Prad­han.
