HISAR: Spurned by a classmate, an engineering student of Guru Jhambeshwar University of Science and Technology hacked her to death in broad daylight at the university campus on Monday.

Pradeep Nain, 21, a resident of Hisar, is a final-year student of BTech (mechanical). He was close to 20-year-old Gitika, a final-year student of BTech (computer science), a resident of Hansi, who stayed at the university hostel.

But of late, the girl had distanced herself from Nain.

Frustrated, around 5.45 pm on Sunday, Nain attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon while she was sitting at the university’s shopping centre.

Rajesh Malhotra, the proctor of the university, said the students present at the spot caught the youth and handed him over to the police.

University vice-chancellor Dr ML Ranga could not be contacted as he is away to the US.

This was the second incident of its kind in the campus.

On August 10, Chetan Sheoran, 21, had stabbed 18year-old Varsha Yadav, a student and hosteller, to death at the same spot for a similar reason. The security staff had managed to overpower him and hand him over to the police.
