With Wednesday’s list, the BJP has declared candidates for 177 of the 182 seats in the assembly. The names of its candidates for five seats in Gandhinagar district are expected to be announced on Thursday.

Of the 177 candidates announced so far, the party has fielded 89 sitting MLAs while dropping 27. In the last assembly polls in 2007, the BJP had dropped as many as 47 MLAs.

A BJP insider said, “The party has adopted a conservative approach this time. It seems the party did not want to annoy sitting MLAs by dropping them.”

Expectedly, the BJP has not fielded any Muslim for the polls. The BJP Minority Morcha had sought three or four seats for Muslim candidates but the party under chief minister Narendra Modi’s influence has refused to give even one.
