SCIENCE & TECH

In July, scientists working at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced that they had found the God particle. WHY WE CARE: According to the Standard Model of Physics, the universe is made of 12 fundamental particles and four fundamental forces. The God particle is the last piece of this model. BACK TO THE BEGINNING: The term ‘God particle’ is a corruption of the swear word ‘Goddamit’. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman dubbed it the “Goddamn” particle, as it proved so hard to isolate. That name was changed by an editor to God particle.
