IIT Hyderabad’s recent convocation was special because the institute crossed the 2000-student mark. The first batches of BTech in civil engineering and master of design (MDes) students also passed out with 42 PhD scholars this year.

In his address at the convocation, Prof UB Desai, director, IIT Hyderabad said, “I congratulate all the faculty and students for their exceptional work and efforts that have brought us the 7th position in the NIRF Rankings of MHRD. We are also a preferred institute amongst the newer IITs.”

The institute currently has 2046 students and 165 full-time faculty. Nearly half of the students are postgraduates; 618 PhDs and 448 MTech, MPhil and MDes. The rest of the 980 students are undergraduates. This year, 578 students, with nearly 20% women, have joined the institute.

This institute is also the only new IIT to have a full bouquet of 14 academic departments covering all areas of engineering, sciences, liberal arts and design. Cross-disciplinary research is encouraged here. A unique FRACTAL academic programme is also the first of its kind where both the breadth and depth of education are captured. Students are offered a wider choice of electives, greater choice for knowledge acquisition and specialisation.
