Boat operator takes initiative to make Udaipur lake safer
Udaipur’s Fatehsagar Lake, which has witnessed many drowning incidents in the recent past, now has protection in place. Irshad Choudhary, a boat operator, has formed a rescue team and procured underwater diving suits to prevent accidents at the lake.
Choudhary said he has taken the initiative keeping in view the non-availability of equipment hampering rescue work. “The death of a 4-year-girl of Jaipur at Fatehsagar Lake forced me to think about a remedy for the prolonged problem of non-availability of better equipment and underwater swim suits for our divers. I sent my son Sohail to Pune to get the training for using the swim suits and he later trained one of my employees,” he said. He also bought swim suits for his son and his team.
On Sunday, both Sohail and the employee, Veelaram, dived into the lake and stayed inside it for around 10 minutes. The duo touched the bottom of the lake within 20 seconds and successfully fetched the key of their boat. While demonstrating the underwater search operation, they even went to that part of the lake where Jaipur girl Chahak had drowned last month after the boat she was riding in collided with another boat.
Another boat operator of the city, Mazhar Khan, who operates his boats in Fatehsagar Lake and Lake Pichola, has also decided to arrange the diving suits for his team of divers. Udaipur mayor Chandra Singh Kothari has also appreciated Choudhary’s initiative and instructed the Udaipur Municipal Corporation commissioner to get diving suits and arrange for the training of their employees to use it.
