A week after the Supreme Court directed all state governments to appoint nodal officers to check cow vigilantism, the Rajasthan government has given this responsibility to police officer Pankaj Kumar Singh.

Singh, additional director general of police (crime), confirmed his appointment to HT but refused to comment.

According to the apex court order, the states also have to file a report on the steps taken to check cow vigilantism.

The Rajasthan government has faced heavy criticism for failing to rein in cow vigilantes or “gaurakshak”.

On April 1, dairy farmer Pehlu Khan was lynched allegedly by gaurakshaks in Alwar while transporting cows to his native village in Haryana.

Police had closed investigations into six men named by the 55-year-old dairy farmer as his assailants..
