A Rajasthan couple, parents to five sons, abandoned their 6-day-old girl child at a deserted place after heaping stones on the infant, eventually leading to her death, police said Wednesday.

Veeram Lal (40) and Soram Bai (35) are parents to a daughter too and they wanted another son. They have been arrested.

The incident coming to light on the International Day of Girl Child (October 11) has once again shamed Rajasthan, which has often hit the headlines over rampant female foeticide.

Additional superintendent of police, Jhalawar, Khushal Singh said the couple has been arrested for abandoning the newborn leading to her death. During preliminary interrogation the couple told the police that they five sons and a daughter and were expecting another son.

“Soram Bai was admitted to government women’s hospital on October 4. She gave birth to a girl child the next day and was discharged after six days on Tuesday afternoon,” the ASP said.

From the hospital, the couple went to a secluded place near Food Corporation of India warehouse on the Jhalarapatan road to abandon the newborn.

A local boy saw the couple heaping stones on the infant and raised an alarm. Some locals caught the duo and handed them over to police.

They also recovered the newborn from under the heap of stones and rushed her to hospital where she died around midnight.

Both Soram and Veeram work as daily-wage labourers. They belong to Thobariya village in Bakani region in Jhalawar.
