deadline set by Union home minister Rajnath Singh for the Union home secretary to convene a meeting to discuss “all related issues” pertaining to the agitation in the north Bengal hills is over, but neither the West Bengal government nor Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has received any communication from the Centre.

Bengal chief secretary Malay De told HT that the state government is yet to receive any communication from the Centre in this regard. Neither of the two factions of the GJM, too, has got any invitation.

Though Singh’s statement did not specify whether the meetings will be bipartite (Centre and agitators) or tripartite, GJM has always insisted on a tripartite issue. The Centre, too, earlier washed off its hand from the contentious issue of a separate state.
