Unveiled in 1927, the memorial at Neuve Chapelle in France was designed by British architect Sir Herbert Baker. The Memorial is dedicated to more than 4,700 Indian soldiers and labourers who lost their lives in action on the Western Front of the war and have no known graves. Neuve Chapelle was chosen as the location for the memorial because it was here, in 1915, that Indian soldiers faced the first major action as a single unit.
