WEEKLY MARKETS ARE MAGNETS FOR PETTY CRIMINALS
CBD BELAPUR: The weekly bazaars at various places in the city have become virtual nightmares for pedestrians and motorists in Navi Mumbai, as they encroach upon roads, causing traffic jams and law and order problems.
Apart from traffic problems, the congregation of a large number of people at these markers makes them havens for pickpockets and thieves, who snatch gold chains from shoppers.
An increase in the number of traders at the weekly bazaars has led to encroachment on roads and footpaths, causing a shortage of walkways for pedestrians. Residents have complained to the authorities to take action against the weekly markets in the city.
There has been a long tradition of weekly markets – held at several nodes on different days – in the city. Around 80 percent of the vendors come from Mumbai and Thane.
