Schools to ig­nite minds on Kalam’s birth­day

While stu­dents across the coun­try will celebrate the birth an­niver­sary of for­mer pres­i­dent Dr APJ Ab­dul Kalam on Thurs­day with no school bags and by read­ing in­spi­ra­tional books, city stu­dents have more ac­tiv­i­ties to look for­ward to.

The state ed­u­ca­tion depart­ment has no­ti­fied the day to be cel­e­brated as no school bag day and Vaachan Pr­erna Di­vas or Read­ing In­spi­ra­tion Day. How­ever, stu­dents of Class 1 to 8 in the city will par­tic­i­pate in var­i­ous ex­tra-cur­ric­u­lar events.

Vashi-based St Lawrence School has planned clay mod­el­ling, story nar­ra­tion and col­lage-mak­ing events for the pri­mary sec­tion.

“The stu­dents of class 5 and 6 will par­tic­i­pate in es­say writ­ing and news­let­ter writ­ing com­pe­ti­tions. The stu­dents of class 7 and 8 will ex­change story books and make pre­sen­ta­tions on life of Dr Kalam,” said Shanti Kr­ish­nan, a fac­ulty from the school.

Stu­dents at Ryan In­ter­na­tional School in Kharghar will be soak­ing their minds in science pro­grammes.“They will en­gage in var­i­ous theme-based science projects un­der the science club. They will also en­act sto­ries. Stu­dents will also present in­no­va­tive ideas,” said Alice Vaz, the prin­ci­pal of the school.

St Augustine school in Nerul has lined up pro­grammes to mark Dr Kalam’s birth­day.

“None of the stu­dents from class 1 to 8 will bring school bags and have been in­structed to bring story books of their choice to ex­change and read. We also have an avid reader com­pe­ti­tion where the best reader will be awarded,” said Maria Lobo, fac­ulty in the school.

Po­dar In­ter­na­tional in Nerul will or­gan­ise a quiz com­pe­ti­tion, ‘Dr­ishti 2020’, to con­nect young minds with Dr Kalam’s Vi­sion 2020.
