Proenza Schouler used the tech­nique to add drama to the shoul­ders of bold dresses, and even the cham­pion of slick Amer­i­can city style, Michael Kors, worked it into his swishy skirts, cre­at­ing a flat­ter­ingly fem­i­nine im­pres­sion.

In Lon­don, the look was less mod­ern and more fo­cused on his­tor­i­cal ref­er­ences. Er­dem got all ro­man­tic, un­veil­ing a col­lec­tion of flo­ral frocks that fea­tured chif­fon, rib­bons and frothy hemlines. Mi­lan light­ened the mood with a bar­rage of pretty, floaty, loose pleats and tucks. The main per­pe­tra­tors were Roberto Cavalli, whose mod­els flounced down the run­way in mod­ern princess cre­ations for red-car­pet oc­ca­sions, and Gucci, where the ‘geek chic’ ap­proach was soft­ened by sev­eral cas­cad­ing chif­fon cre­ations.
