2 killed in pile-up af­ter tempo loses con­trol on ex­press­way

NAVI MUM­BAI: A pile-up of ve­hi­cles on the Mum­bai-Pune ex­press­way led to the death of two peo­ple and in­jured at least 4 on Wed­nes­day af­ter­noon.

The in­jured have been ad­mit­ted to hos­pi­tals in Pan­vel.

The ac­ci­dent oc­curred near Khopoli in Dheku vil­lage area be­fore the Kha­la­pur toll naka, around 4.30 pm.

Ac­cord­ing to a lo­cal po­lice of­fi­cial, “A tempo (MH04 CU4240) head­ing from Pune to Mum­bai had a brake fail­ure which led to the driver los­ing con­trol of the ve­hi­cle.”

“The tempo then hit at least seven ve­hi­cles be­fore com­ing to a halt,” said the of­fi­cial.

Sev­eral ve­hi­cles were badly dam­aged in the ac­ci­dent.

One of the dead has been iden­ti­fied as Bharat Ki­ratkude. He was de­clared dead on ar­rival at Panacea hospi­tal in Pune.

Two other in­jured at the hospi­tal, re­port­edly res­i­dents of Thane are said to be in a crit­i­cal state.

The in­jured in­clude Parag Shah, 40, who has suf­fered head in­jury and Ra­jesh Bolka­wde, who has frac­tured his limbs.

Dr Suren­dra Rathod, who is treat­ing the in­jured, said, “Their con­di­tion is se­ri­ous. Shah is on ven­ti­la­tor as he is hav­ing dif­fi­culty in breath­ing. Bolka­wde has mul­ti­ple frac­tures on his right up­per and lower limbs from where he was hit.”

The ac­ci­dent led to traf­fic snarl on the road for a cou­ple of hours due to the pile-up. Mo­torists tak­ing the wrong lane fur­ther wors­ened the sit­u­a­tion.
