Brace for 20% wa­ter cut from to­mor­row

Plan­ning agency to pro­vide re­cy­cled wa­ter from its sewage treat­ment plants for non-potable uses; the move will add 20 mld to sup­ply by Dec 2016

CBD BE­LA­PUR: Res­i­dents will have to bear the brunt of less rain­fall this year as City and In­dus­trial De­vel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (Cidco) has de­clared 20% wa­ter cuts in the ar­eas un­der its ju­ris­dic­tion from Novem­ber 6.

The plan­ning author­ity was forced to de­clare the cuts ow­ing to less rain­fall in the catch­ment ar­eas of Morbe Dam, Barvi Dam and Patal­ganga Wa­ter Sup­ply Scheme (PWSS).

Cidco has ob­served a short sup­ply of 33 mil­lion litres per day (MLD) with re­spect to the present de­mand of 216 MLD ow­ing to wa­ter cuts in ar­eas un­der Navi Mum­bai Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion, Ma­ha­rash­tra In­dus­trial De­vel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (MIDC) and Ma­ha­rash­tra Jee­van Prad­hikaran.

The de­tails of wa­ter sup­ply hours and zon­ing of each node have been up­loaded on the plan­ning author­ity’s web­site www. cidco.ma­ha­rash­tra.gov.in

“Cidco has been mon­i­tor­ing the sit­u­a­tion daily. It has re­quested ad­di­tional 3 MLD of wa­ter from MIDC, ex­pected to be sup­plied in two months,” said Mohan Ni­nawe, chief pub­lic re­la­tions of­fi­cer of Cidco.

“The aug­men­ta­tion of raw wa­ter pumps at Hetawane wa­ter treat­ment plant will add an­other 15 MLD to the wa­ter sup­ply. The project is ex­pected to be com­pleted in May 2016,” he said.

“An ad­di­tional wa­ter sup­ply of 35 MLD over and above the present 85 MLD from the PWSS will be avail­able by De­cem­ber 2016,” said Ni­nawe.

Ni­nawe said that the aug­men­ta­tion of pipe­line from 1,200 mm di­am­e­ter to 1500 mm be­tween Hetawane Dam and Cidco’s wa­ter treat­ment plant at Jite in Pen is ex­pected to be com­pleted by May 2017. The move will add 35 MLD to its sup­ply.

Cidco has also re­quested the state gov­ern­ment and MIDC for an ad­di­tional 100 MLD, ex­pected to be avail­able by De­cem­ber 2016, from the Barvi Dam.

In an­other at­tempt, Cidco plans to pro­vide re­cy­cled wa­ter from its sewage treat­ment plants for var­i­ous pur­poses other than drink­ing. This will add 20 MLD to the wa­ter sup­ply by De­cem­ber 2016.

“For a long-term so­lu­tion, Cidco has un­der­taken the Bal­ganga Dam to add 350 MLD of drink­ing wa­ter to the sup­ply. Wa­ter from the dam, presently un­der lit­i­ga­tion, is ex­pected to be avail­able by 2022. By 2020, 300 MLD of drink­ing wa­ter would be avail­able from Kond­hane dam,” said Ni­nawe.

He added that the cor­po­ra­tion was plan­ning to set up de­sali­na­tion plants and bring Koyna tail wa­ter to MMRDA re­gion.
