After mishaps, residents’ demand for FOB grows louder
TURBHE: Upset with the growing number of fatal accidents on Thane-Belapur Road, residents of Turbhe store area have revived their demand for a foot-overbridge (FoB) to be constructed on the road at the earliest.
The demand was made in the light of the recent fatality in which a woman, identified as Kirandevi Rajak, 32, and her son Satyam, 3, were killed in an accident around 6.30am on Saturday on Thane-Belapur Road.
The residents and elected representatives of the area have repeatedly followed up on the issue. But there has been little action from the administration. The residents also blocked the road on Saturday to protest against the administration’s lackadaisical approach. The police had to intervene to bring the situation under control.
Residents said there have been several accidents on Thane-Belapur Road. Prakash Kharat, a local resident, said, “On the eastend of Thane-Belapur Road is a residential area, while the railway station is on the west side. Hence, people have no option but to cross the road. There are speed breakers on the road, but motorists continue to cross the speed limit, often leading to accidents.”
Rajesh Shende, a nominated Shiv Sena corporator, said, “For years, we have been demanding a foot overbridge, traffic signal and more speed breakers. Around 5 to 6 people have been killed in the past six months. Unfortunately, the administration does not seem interested.”
Local corporator Suresh Kulkarni said, “I have been following up on the issue. The estimate for the project has been prepared. There has been a delay in appointing a consultant.”
He added, “There was no progress owing to monsoon. But I have written to the civic body and I am confident a foot overbridge will be constructed at the earliest.”
