FOB at Turbhe store: Civic body to prepare proposal in a week
CBD BELAPUR: In the wake of the growing demand from Turbhe store residents for a foot overbridge on the Thane-Belapur Road, the civic body has assured that a proposal to construct the FOB will be prepared within a week and presented before the standing committee. “How many more lives will it take for the administration to construct the foot overbridge that we have been demanding for years?” said local corporator Suresh Kulkarni at the standing committee meeting held on Thursday.
He added, “For the past oneand-a-half years, the civic officials have only been preparing designs for the FOB. I have been repeatedly following up on the issue, but the officials have been lackadaisical about its construction.”
NMMC house leader Jaywant Sutar said, “In case of accidents, it is the local elected representative who has to face the residents, the officials escape their responsibility.”
Replying to the discussion, city engineer Mohan Dagaonkar said, “We will finalise the design by Thursday evening. A proposal for the FOB will be readied in a week.”
Explaining the reason for the delay, Dagaonkar said, “When constructing the Thane Belapur Road, a flyover was planned at Turbhe store. However, it was not constructed after local residents opposed it.”
“If a skywalk has to be constructed there now, we will have to take into account three roads — KKR Road, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and Thane-Belapur Road,” he added.
According to Dagaonkar, “A design for it had been made, but there were issues related to the height of the skywalk. From past experience, it has been observed that pedestrians prefer to use underpasses over skywalks and hence, we planned to construct an underpass.”
“But this plan also hit a roadblock fearing damage to the Morbe dam water pipelines, gas pipelines present underground. All these issues led to the delay,” said Dagaonkar.
