Mayor’s bungalow plot not right for the Bal Thackeray memorial: Committee
MUMBAI: A committee appointed by the state to study where the Bal Thackeray memorial can be built had told the government in its report that the Mayor’s Bungalow plot was not suitable and that the government should choose the plot next to it, the BMC gymkhana.
This committee, headed by the then civic chief, had also said the land should be allocated to a public trust, and not a family trust as demanded by the Shiv Sena.
On Tuesday, the state government announced a permanent memorial to the Sena’s founder will be built at the Shivaji Park plot on which the mayor’s bungalow stands. Just days after this announcement, senior state government officials feel the hurdles to allotting that plot for the memorial are many, among them coastal regulation zone rules, heritage structure regulations and a 2014 Supreme Court ruling that prohibits governments from allotting government plots for memorials.
Although the site finalised by the state was one of eight short-listed by a high-powered committee, headed by chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya, the committee was clear when it listed the hindrances in developing the memorial at the bungalow.
