150 slums demolished in Vashi gaon
VASHI: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) demolished around 150 slums in Vashi gaon on Friday in the presence of heavy police bandobast.
These slums, which had come up on a City Industrial and Development Corporation (Cidco) plot adjacent to a new subway constructed near the Navi Mumbai Sports Association, were home to mostly illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, said civic officials.
NMMC Vashi ward officer Mahendra Thoke said, “We had received several complaints from local residents, who said the slum dwellers were defecating in the open, creating unhygienic conditions for residents in the area. The residents also said the slum dwellers would often steal water.”
“Though this plot does not fall in an area under our jurisdiction, we have taken action as we received a request from the police who thought it could pose a risk to the residents’ security. We will now speak to Cidco to fence the area to prevent any encroachment in the future,” said Thoke, adding, action will be taken in the coming days against more illegal slums in the area.
