STATE PLANS TO REWARD 44 JAIL PERSONNEL FOR HANGING YAKUB
MUMBAI: The state home department has proposed that 44 personnel and officers from the jail department involved in the hanging of ’93 blasts convict Yakub Memon at the Nagpur jail earlier this year be felicitated for ‘efficient performance and maintaining utmost secrecy during the execution’.
The proposal was first moved by Meeran Borwankar, who was the additional director general of police and inspector general of prisons at the time.
According to the home department’s proposal, six senior prison officers will get an appreciation certificate, while 38 others will get cash awards ranging from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000. The total cash prize proposed will add up to Rs8.30 lakh, a Mantralaya official said, requesting anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The jail personnel were handpicked for cash prizes and certificates and were involved in both administrative duties and the execution, sources said.
