STATE PLANS TO RE­WARD 44 JAIL PER­SON­NEL FOR HANG­ING YAKUB

MUM­BAI: The state home depart­ment has pro­posed that 44 per­son­nel and of­fi­cers from the jail depart­ment in­volved in the hang­ing of ’93 blasts con­vict Yakub Me­mon at the Nag­pur jail ear­lier this year be fe­lic­i­tated for ‘ef­fi­cient per­for­mance and main­tain­ing ut­most se­crecy dur­ing the ex­e­cu­tion’.

The pro­posal was first moved by Meeran Bor­wankar, who was the ad­di­tional di­rec­tor gen­eral of po­lice and in­spec­tor gen­eral of pris­ons at the time.

Ac­cord­ing to the home depart­ment’s pro­posal, six se­nior prison of­fi­cers will get an ap­pre­ci­a­tion cer­tifi­cate, while 38 oth­ers will get cash awards rang­ing from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000. The to­tal cash prize pro­posed will add up to Rs8.30 lakh, a Mantralaya of­fi­cial said, re­quest­ing anonymity, as he is not au­tho­rised to speak to the me­dia.

The jail per­son­nel were hand­picked for cash prizes and cer­tifi­cates and were in­volved in both ad­min­is­tra­tive du­ties and the ex­e­cu­tion, sources said.
