CORPORATOR UPSET OVER COSTLY BILL, THROWS CASH AT HOSPITAL STAFFER
VASHI: Shiv Sena corporator Shivram Patil, incensed at just a Rs5,000 discount being given to a poor patient at Fortis Hiranandani hospital after he had appealed for help, threw Rs5,000 at a hospital official on Tuesday.
Patil has threatened to go to court against the alleged arbitrary conduct of the hospital with which NMMC has a tie-up. He plans to raise the issue in the NMMC standing committee as well.
The hospital has denied any wrong-doing wondering why the corporator resorted to the action.
The case pertained to Priyanka Sawant, who was temporarily working as a teacher in Khopoli.
According to a hospital official Bipin Chevle, “Priyanka Sawant was admitted to the ICU at Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, on November 21 with primary pulmonary hypertension and ITP (a serious bleeding immuno-disorder in which the platelets self-destruct).”
The patient was successfully treated by the hospital and was discharged on the seventh day. Although the patient was admitted as a regular patient, the next of kin, regretted their inability to pay the balance amount at the time of discharge.
“Given the circumstances, this amount was completely waived off by the hospital on compassionate grounds,” added Chevle.
According to Patil, “The hospital presented a bill of Rs4.12 lakh to the patients’ family. They took loans and grants from the people in their village to pay for it. They approached me for help in getting some discount on the bill.”
He added, “I met a hospital official and requested him to reduce the bill. After a wait of one and a half hours, the patient was given a discount of Rs5,000.”
Patil said, “At any other hospital in the city, if the economic condition of the patient is poor, a discount of at least 10% to 20% is given. The Rs5,000 discount on a bill of over Rs4 lakh is an insult to all and hence I threw the money .”
