Cidco demolishes 725 shanties at Airoli
The structures at three locations were built on Cidco land without permission
AIROLI: Going all out against illegal structures in Airoli, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) demolished around 725 shanties at three locations in Airoli on Thursday.
The action is being taken as per the orders of the Bombay high court and as directed by Yogesh Mhase, additional collector and Cidco chief controller of unauthorised construction (CCUC) to take stringent action against the unauthorised constructions in Navi Mumbai.
In continuation with the demolition drive at Airoli, Cidco targeted slums in Sector 17, 20 and at Neva garden area.
According to a Cidco official, “Around 250 hutments were demolished in Sector 17, over 350 hutments in Sector 20 and 125 shanties that had come up in Neva garden area.”
The official said that these structures were constructed on Cidco land without having any land title and development permissions from Cidco. Accordingly, the corporation under the due process of law removed the encroachments.
The demolition drive saw emotional scenes at the sites as families cried over the loss of their houses for which they had paid large sums.
Ajay Kumar, who works as a waiter in a bar and lived with his wife and two children in one of the shanties, said, “A year and a half ago, I paid Rs1,12,000 for a 10ft x 10ft room to two people who claimed they owned the land. They had assured me that I would not face any problem and that they would take care of everything.”
He said, “I have lost all my savings. Where will I now go with my family? I was away at work when I learnt about the demolition and rushed back. I am ruined.”
Bapu Pode, a local social worker, said, “Nobody comes to help the poor in times of their difficulties. The politicians will come only if it is a big building.”
He said, “We will hold a protest at Azad Maidan on Saturday to protest against the injustice being meted out to us.”
