CBD BELAPUR: A recent case of a bogus doctor practising in the city for the past 18 years is not an isolated one. Official records show that a large number of such doctors are practising in the city virtually playing with the lives of the residents.
The inadequacy of the civic health system seems to have boosted the prospects of the bogus doctors in Navi Mumbai. .
A survey by NMMC has revealed that there are at least 27 bogus doctors operating in the gaothan and slum areas. Further, in 904 private clinics, there are at least 334 doctors who do not have the requisite documents
The case of Dattatrey Agde, a bogus doctor operating from his Sanjeevani clinic in Sector 6 of Nerul had recently come to light. He was arrested for negligence causing the death of unsuspecting patients.
Arvind Chavan, a resident of Nerul, said, “The doctor who ran his clinic for the past 15 years was quite well known in the area. There used to be a heavy rush of patients at his clinic. I too used to go to him. Now we are all so worried. We have no idea what injections he used to give us.”
The case has brought to fore the menace of bogus doctors in the city. Sources say that a number of bogus doctors have started clinics in the slums and villages within the NMMC jurisdiction.
An NMMC health department official said, “NMMC had sent a communication to all 904 clinics in the city asking those running it to submit the requisite documents for verification. So far only 570 doctors of the clinics have submitted the complete documents. The documents of 334 clinics are as yet incomplete.”
