NAVI MUMBAI: In a bid to adopt eco-friendly measures, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) is now mulling to introduce electric buses to ply on the city roads soon.

According to officials, two Delhi-based automobile companies have approached the transport body to try out their model buses on a trial-run basis for a month.

The move comes at a time when NMMT is already working towards providing environmentfriendly transport with the introduction of hybrid buses in the city by next year.

“We recently received a letter from two automobile companies asking us to try out their model buses which are fully operational on electricity for a trial basis,” said Sabu Daniel, NMMT chairman.

“We will discuss with the administration about this before taking the trial and making further plans,” he said.

Speaking about the proposal, the official said that the proposal is good and would be beneficial for reducing the carbon footprint in the city with the introduction of more eco-friendly vehicles.

“However, we need to check all the parameters before like the total cost and how viable will it be in long run and then opt for running it on a trial basis,” he added.

The buses will have zero emission level and will run on electricity. They can be charged at specific junctions which will have charging points.

These electric buses are generally plied on predictable routes so that they can be taken for quick recharging. Solar panels are being used in these buses to power the specific air-conditioning circuit.

Meanwhile, the transport body is all set to add its much-awaited hybrid buses to its fleet by the first half of 2016. The buses will be received under the Centre’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM-2) scheme. “There are total 10 hybrid buses which we are scheduled to get under the scheme. Two buses will be introduced in January,” said officials.
