VASHI: In a novel form of protest, the mathadis (head loaders) of the wholesale APMC market of Vashi, formed a human chain to welcome chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and then submitted a memorandum of demands to him. The mathadis are upset at being denied any hearing by the government in the past one year.

The protest was led by NCP MLC Narendra Patil in a bike rally from the wholesale market in Vashi to Shivaji Chowk and then to the toll plaza.

Narendra Patil said, “There are issues of mathadi housing, restrictions at APMC wholesale market putting a question mark on its very existence, the mathadi board and also on the Wadala housing complex for mathadis. There has been no action on them.”

He added, “The chief minister has given a positive response by stopping his convoy, talking to us for a few minutes and accepting our memorandum. We hope there will be further action on it.”
