Water transport plan: Cidco to issue tenders for jetty at Nerul
CBD BELAPUR: You will soon be able to take a ferry to Mumbai and even Goa.
The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) will issue tenders for a jetty at Nerul on Monday.
As part of its Navi Mumbai (South) smart city project, Cidco has been taking up several connectivity projects.
The RoRo (Roll-On/ Roll-Off) water service is one among them. It will enable residents to take their vehicles along the water route in the vessels.
Giving details of the project, Cidco vice-chairman and managing director Sanjay Bhatia said, “We have a huge coastal belt in the city and it can be used well for water transport which has long been pending. It will ease the burden on the highways and save the commuters from traffic jams.”
Bhatia said, “There are three agencies involved in the project. Cidco will be working on the project with Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) and Bombay Port Trust (BPT) to start the water transport.”
According to Bhatia, “Jetties will be developed at Bhaucha Dhaka by BPT, MMB will develop Mandwa in Raigad and we will develop the Nerul jetty.”
Bhatia added they would be calling for tenders for the Nerul jetty on Monday.
Plans are afoot to develop the jetties in such a manner that travellers will be able to use RoRo service at all the three jetties to go to Goa.
The water transport project is expected to be completed in two years.
