VASHI: Four days after a 29-yearold man was found murdered, his wife was arrested for killing him.

Sangeeta Patil, 25, and two others — one of them is her boyfriend — allegedly murdered the man for harassing her constantly. The woman’s mother too has been made an accused in the case.

The deceased Swapnil, a resident of Nhava, was found seriously injured at Ramlila ground in Nerul by a beat marshal on Tuesday night.

He was taken to DY Patil Hospital in Nerul but was declared dead on arrival. The victim had serious injuries to the side of his head, forehead, neck and ribs.

Senior police inspector of Nerul police station Sangeeta Alphonso found a wallet in Swapnil’s trouser and found the visiting card of Jitendra Mhatre, his uncle. Other documents found on him revealed his identity.

“Swapnil’s family told us that he had gone to his in-laws’ place at Nerul. They also told us that his wife Sangeeta had earlier eloped with a village youth (name withheld) and that she had an illicit relationship with him. They named him as a suspect,” said Shahji Umap, deputy commissioner of police.

The police detained the youth and registered a murder case against him. Investigations, however, revealed that he was not involved.

Umap said that initially there were no clues in the case.

“The inspection of the murder site revealed a blood-stained stone, empty liquor bottles, plastic glasses, blood-soaked hair and blood on the ground,” said Umap.

The police started questioning the wife and the in-laws.

“Following sustained questioning, the wife named Salman Shaikh, 21, a resident of Karad. She revealed that Swapnil, Salman and three of his accomplices had come home in the afternoon.”

He added, “We also learnt that they had alcohol bottles with them. This led us to suspect that Salman and his accomplices had killed Swapnil for some reason and we investigated the angle further.”

The police sent teams to Pune, Karad, Shahuwadi and Kolhapur to look for Shaikh, a cattle trader, and managed to get him from Karad and also an accomplice of his named Shahid Sutar, 25, who has a cycle repair shop in Karad.

“Interrogation of the two revealed that Sangeeta, who is originally from Karad, was also involved in the crime along with Malhari, 25, alias Malia who was later arrested.”

Giving details of the motive, Umap said, “Sangeeta has claimed that Swapnil was an alcoholic and would beat her regularly and also demand money from her. She and her mother decided to get rid of him. She then contacted Shaikh, with whom she had an affair, to get rid of her husband.”

They planned to kill Swapnil and called him to Sangeeta’s mother’s house at Nerul.

He added, “Shaikh and his friends came from Karad, got Swapnil drunk and then stoned him to death.”

Sources said Sangeeta had made false allegations against her husband.

Umap has announced a reward of Rs10,000 for the investigating team for having cracked the case despite lack of clues.
