Nerul cop jailed for tak­ing ` 12K bribe

A po­lice con­sta­ble work­ing with the Nerul po­lice sta­tion was on Fri­day con­victed for ac­cept­ing Rs12,000 as bribe, and sen­tenced to one- year rig­or­ous im­pris­on­ment by a lo­cal court.

Thane dis­trict judge MM Wal­imo­ham­mad held con­sta­ble Keshav Vikram Patil guilty un­der Preven­tion of Cor­rup­tion Act, 1988.

A fine of Rs 500 was also im­posed on him.

Pros­e­cu­tor Hem­la­tana Desh­mukh told the court that the com­plainant had a busi­ness of re­pair­ing mo­biles and a shop in Mum­bra.

A com­plaint was made against him of buy­ing and sell­ing stolen mo­bile phones, upon which an in­quiry was con­ducted by the po­lice. Sub­se­quently, he was first called to Mum­bra, Vikhroli and fi­nally to Nerul po­lice sta­tion.

At Nerul po­lice sta­tion, the ac­cused made a de­mand of Rs12,000 for not ar­rest­ing him in the mo­bile theft case, the court was told.

Ac­cord­ing to the pros­e­cu­tion, the po­lice­man, sens­ing trou­ble, took the com­plainant to an iso­lated lo­ca­tion in a rick­shaw and ac­cepted the money from him there, where he was trapped.

The court held that the con­vict com­mit­ted an of­fence fall­ing un­der rel­e­vant sec­tions of PC Act of 1988.
