Police rope in citizens to improve law and order
PANVEL: The director- general of police (DGP) has instructed all police stations in the state to implement the police mitr concept.
Accordingly, the zone II has embarked on a process of making 1,000 police mitr ( friends) in the city.
The objective of the drive is to use contacts and information of the residents and to motivate them to share it with the police force as a part of their social responsibility and also to help them in securing the city.
The police have said that the police mitr are being given duties every day and briefed on the work and they are also patrolling the streets in the night along with policemen to help maintain law and order.
Once the process of appointments is completed, each police station will take the help of the police mitr as per their requirement.
Navi Mumbai police commissionerate includes Navi Mumbai, Panvel and Uran talukas. While Navi Mumbai falls under zone I, Panvel and Uran come under zone II.
This zone i ncludes residential areas, highway, market, MIDC and the increased urbanisation is putting pressure on the police force which has limited strength. Hence, the system of police mitr has been initiated to support the police in their work.
The police are working on getting police mitr from every section of society.
Vishwas Pandhare, deputy commissioner of police ( zone II), said, “Our zone includes areas of Panvel, New Panvel, Khande shwar, Ka mo the, Kharghar, Kalamboli, Taloja, Uran and Nhava Sheva which are witnessing rising population for which the police strength is not adequate. There is little chance of the strength increasing anytime soon either.”
He added ,“A lot of our personnel are always busy in bandobast duty for elections, morchas, agitations, public meetings, VIP travel among others”
Pandhare said, “It is to augment the police force that 1,000 police mitr are being appointed as per the instructions received from the director general of police.”
Pandhare said, “These police mitr will help us in nakabandi, night patrolling and preventing of chain snatching, eve teasing incidents and also to create awareness on preventing possible terrorist attacks.”
Speaking on the work, Haridas Keni, a police mitr, said, “As per the instructions, I go to accident spots, bandobast and even to court. I try my best to support the police as I believe it is our social responsibility.”
