Po­lice rope in cit­i­zens to im­prove law and or­der

PAN­VEL: The di­rec­tor- gen­eral of po­lice (DGP) has in­structed all po­lice sta­tions in the state to im­ple­ment the po­lice mitr con­cept.

Ac­cord­ingly, the zone II has em­barked on a process of making 1,000 po­lice mitr ( friends) in the city.

The ob­jec­tive of the drive is to use con­tacts and in­for­ma­tion of the res­i­dents and to mo­ti­vate them to share it with the po­lice force as a part of their so­cial re­spon­si­bil­ity and also to help them in se­cur­ing the city.

The po­lice have said that the po­lice mitr are be­ing given du­ties ev­ery day and briefed on the work and they are also pa­trolling the streets in the night along with po­lice­men to help main­tain law and or­der.

Once the process of ap­point­ments is com­pleted, each po­lice sta­tion will take the help of the po­lice mitr as per their re­quire­ment.

Navi Mum­bai po­lice com­mis­sion­er­ate in­cludes Navi Mum­bai, Pan­vel and Uran talukas. While Navi Mum­bai falls un­der zone I, Pan­vel and Uran come un­der zone II.

This zone i ncludes res­i­den­tial ar­eas, high­way, mar­ket, MIDC and the in­creased ur­ban­i­sa­tion is putting pres­sure on the po­lice force which has lim­ited strength. Hence, the sys­tem of po­lice mitr has been ini­ti­ated to sup­port the po­lice in their work.

The po­lice are work­ing on get­ting po­lice mitr from ev­ery sec­tion of so­ci­ety.

Vish­was Pand­hare, deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice ( zone II), said, “Our zone in­cludes ar­eas of Pan­vel, New Pan­vel, Khande shwar, Ka mo the, Kharghar, Kalamboli, Taloja, Uran and Nhava Sheva which are wit­ness­ing ris­ing pop­u­la­tion for which the po­lice strength is not ad­e­quate. There is lit­tle chance of the strength in­creas­ing any­time soon ei­ther.”

He added ,“A lot of our per­son­nel are al­ways busy in ban­dobast duty for elec­tions, mor­chas, ag­i­ta­tions, pub­lic meet­ings, VIP travel among oth­ers”

Pand­hare said, “It is to aug­ment the po­lice force that 1,000 po­lice mitr are be­ing ap­pointed as per the in­struc­tions re­ceived from the di­rec­tor gen­eral of po­lice.”

Pand­hare said, “Th­ese po­lice mitr will help us in naka­bandi, night pa­trolling and pre­vent­ing of chain snatch­ing, eve teas­ing in­ci­dents and also to cre­ate aware­ness on pre­vent­ing pos­si­ble ter­ror­ist at­tacks.”

Speak­ing on the work, Hari­das Keni, a po­lice mitr, said, “As per the in­struc­tions, I go to accident spots, ban­dobast and even to court. I try my best to sup­port the po­lice as I be­lieve it is our so­cial re­spon­si­bil­ity.”
