Claiming that the NCP claim of corporators losing power in the project is hollow, Chougule said: “What power does the mayor have today? He has to toe the line of his leaders. Neither the first citizen of Navi Mumbai nor the deputy mayor was present for the high-profile international level event organised by the NCP leader in the city earlier this week. Since when has the NCP started to care for the rights of the corporators?”

Shiv Sena corporator MK Madhvi, who was earlier with the NCP, said: “While the opposition corporators are not allowed to speak in the standing committee and other meetings, even their own corporators are gagged.”

“We were asked at our premeetings if we wanted to speak in the general body meeting on any issue. If we said yes, we were given some explanation and told not to speak in the house as we had already been answered.”

Madhvi said: “They did not even bother to discuss with us the smart city project objections they had earlier. They came straight to the general body meeting with a set plan and rejected the proposal.”
