NMMC on save mode, imposes 25% water cut
Civic body writes to housing societies on conserving water, asks residents to not waste drinking water on washing vehicles
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Coporation (NMMC) has announced that it would impose a 22% to 25% water cut in the city.
The water cuts have upset citizens. With several residents complaining of lack of water in their area, the Shiv Sena staged a ‘ matka morcha’ agitation on Monday. One of the smart city parameters is to have 24x7 water supply.
NMMC sources say that the water stock in Morbe dam is below normal. Fears are being expressed that if water is not used judiciously, the dam would be empty by March.
Arvind Shinde, NMMC executive engineer (water supply), said, “We appeal to the residents to conserve water and not waste it. They should cooperate with us to save at least 25% water.”
The NMMC had supplied water for 24 hours to almost 80% of the areas in the city. In the rest of the city, water was supplied for at least four hours in a day. Due to poor rainfall this year, the Morbe dam did not fill up.
Only a 25% water cut can ensure that there is water supply to residents till the next monsoon.
But the water cut schedule was not communicated in time to all the citizens, which led to several people not getting drinking water on Saturday and Sunday, because they had not stocked up. With the taps suddenly running dry, the residents were peeved.
With residents planning protests, the administration has started issuing letters to every housing society to apprise them about the water cut, ways to save water and the schedule of water supply. Shinde said, “NMMC has asked residents to conserve water. It has asked them to not waste water in washing of vehicles and other work.”
He added, “The water supply department has told the gardens department not to use drinking water to water plants. It has asked the department to use water from the sewage treatment plant instead.”
Shinde said, “We will ensure that citizens get three hours of water supply daily. Residents of MIDC areas will face water cuts on Thursday and Friday.”
ONLY A 25% WATER CUT NOW CAN ENSURE THAT THERE IS WATER SUPPLY TO THE RESIDENTS TILL THE NEXT MONSOON.
