THE NMMC’S LETTER TO CITIZENS
Navi Mumbai gets water from Morbe dam, while some areas are supplied water that is sourced from MIDC.
The Morbe catchment area receives around 3,134.2mm rainfall [in each monsoon season]. But this year the rainfall has been only 2,200 mm. Because of the deficient rainfall, the water stock is very low.
Morbe dam, at present, has 80.73 mcm (million cubic metres) of water, while at the same time last year, the stock was 155.94mcm.
The dam at present is filled only to 45% capacity. To ensure that the water lasts till the next monsoon, there is a need for a water cut and proper use of available water.
Similarly, MIDC’s Barve dam area, too, has received inadequate rainfall this year and hence MIDC has announced a 48-hour shutdown every week from Wednesday midnight to Friday midnight. Saturday will see water supply at low pressure.
Taking into account the available water stock, water cut is being imposed for residents of NMMC jurisdiction area.
