NCP adjourns general body meeting, cites code of conduct
There seems to be something seriously wrong with the Nationalist Congress Party’s decisions and actions of late. First it rejected the smart city project resolution earlier this month, after promoting it for months.
On Friday, the NCP adjourned the general body meeting soon after it started citing the code of conduct for the Nerul by-polls.
The adjournment has come in for criticism by the opposition which has blamed it for wasting time and money of the corporation and the corporators.
NMMC opposition leader Vijay Chougule said, “One fails to understand why the general body meeting was called in the first place, when the ruling party knew that the code of conduct is in place.”
He added, “Today, everyone came prepared to speak on such important issues of water supply shortage and smart city. We are however, returning without any discussion.”
As soon as the house convened, respects were paid to farmers’ leader Sharad Joshi, who passed away recently.
NMMC house leader Jaywant Sutar then stood up and said, “Since the elections to Nerul ward 88 have been announced, the code of conduct has come in force and hence the meeting should be adjourned.”
Chougule, who spoke next told mayor Sudhakar Sonawane, “Next time, there are plans to adjourn such meetings, call the opposition to your office and discuss it.”
He added, “If you wanted to adjourn the meeting, why did you call everyone all this way to the headquarters.”
The mayor then adjourned the meeting. Sonawane said, “We had announced the general body meeting and the agenda had been sent. However, later, the by-elections to ward 88 were announced bringing the code of conduct into effect.”
He added, “Since the general body had been called, it was necessary to present the condolence resolution and then adjourn the meeting.”
Municipal commissioner D i n e s h Wa g h m a r e said, “Holding of meetings is not under my jurisdiction and hence I cannot comment on it.”
An NMMC official said, “The election department of NMMC had not given the letter of code of conduct being in force to the NMMC secretary office and hence the meeting was not called off.”
The Sector 3 area of Nerul that falls under the ward was hotly contested in the civic elections held in April this year with the Congress candidate Nutan Raut losing by around 250 votes to NCP’s Shashikala Maladi.
The by- election has been necessitated after the death of corporator Shashikala Maladi.
