The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has declared that Shilpa Kamble will be its candidate for the by-elections to ward 88 in Nerul that will be held on January 10, next year. With the Congress already stating that its previous candidate Nutan Raut will re-contest, all eyes are now on what decision the Shiv Sena – BJP takes.

The election has been necessitated due to the death of sitting NCP corporator Shashikala Maladi.

The decision was announced by NCP state general secretary and former MP Sanjeev Naik at Sector 3 in Nerul on Thursdayduring a party workers’ meet.

Naik who expressed confidence of the party candidate’s victory said, “I have asked the party workers to work hard to ensure the party candidate’s victory so that Maladi’s dream of development in the ward fructifies.”

The official announcement by the NCP has set the ball rolling for the election. The Congress has informally already stated that the losing candidate in the last election, Nutan Raut will be its candidate.

The Shiv Sena and BJP are reported to be in talks on the seat. The two parties had contested the last civic elections in alliance.

The seat had then been given to the BJP, which had come in the third place. The BJP is now reported to be again staking claim to the seat. The Shiv Sena feels it has a better chance.

A meeting between Shiv Sena opposition leader Vijay Chougule and BJP MLA Manda Mhatre was reportedly held on the issue on Friday.

Said a top Shiv Sena leader, “We are explaining to the BJP leaders that a Shiv Sena candidate will be able to give a better fight to the NCP candidate and actually win the seat.”

He added, “This is a great opportunity to show the NCP the power of the united opposition and the mood of the people. The BJP needs to cooperate.”
