The demand: That Central Railway should run an 8.30 am women’s special train from Badlapur to CST

Why: Women commuters are suffering because of increasing rush hour crowds

What they are doing: Women commuters have organised themselves. Three months ago, they launched a signature campaign with a list of their demands, and collected 8,303 signatures. They recently sent these with a letter to railways minister Suresh Prabhu.

The existing women’s special train from Badlapur to CST runs at 8.02 am. It is a slow local, but it, too, has got overcrowded.

VIJI JAYACHANDRAN, 43, Kalyan resident During the peak hours, each train is packed full. Even the cargo that goes aboard the goods wagons is well-handled. We in Mumbai have lost the value of comfortable travel. We are used to abuse and torture on the local train here.”
