Man who threatened girl with acid attack held
A 22-year-old man from Panvel who had allegedly been harassing a 16-year-old girl for the past several months and threatened her with acid, has been arrested on Wednesday.
The police said the accused, Nikhil Gharat, has a mobile phone store at Panvel. He used to hang around the girl’s school and also followed her to her house.
“The girl, a student of class 10, had informed her parents about it a couple of months ago, but they did not report it assuming the accused would stop following her,” said Arachana Gadhave, subinspector from Panvel city police station.
However, things did not happen as expected. “One day the accused called the girl on her mobile phone and said he was in love with her. After that the girl’s mother started dropping her to school every day,” she said. “On Tuesday, when the girl reached school with her mother, the accused sent her a mobile phone through one of his women friends. He then called her and said he would attack her with acid if she did not respond to his overtures,” Gadhave said.
The girl’s mother then got enraged and reported the matter to the police. Following an FIR registered by her mother, the police arrested Gharat from his residence. He has been booked under sections 304D, 506 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
He was produced before the judicial court on Wednesday and has been remanded in police custody till December 26. The police have not found any criminal record against him so far.
