Holiday rush leads to traffic snarls on Sion-Panvel highway
VASHI: The Sion-Panvel highway that runs through Navi Mumbai from Vashi toll naka witnessed heavy traffic snarls on Friday morning as motorists from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai took advantage of the long weekend to celebrate festival time outside the city. There was traffic towards Mumbai as well with residents heading there for Christmas celebrations.
Long queues on the Vashi creek bridge and from the toll naka extended up to CBD Belapur till afternoon.
Manoj Meghchiana, a resident of Dadar, said, “The traffic was simply not moving. First, we were stuck at the toll naka and then the highway. It took me over an hour to pass through Vashi and Nerul and reach CBD Belapur.”
Krishna Desai, another motorist, said, “Everyone seems to be leaving Mumbai and heading for other destinations. We started early to avoid rush, but got caught in the traffic nevertheless.” Vashi toll officials said they were doing their best to ensure minimum halt at the toll naka. Navi Mumbai traffic personnel could be seen regulating traffic at the junctions to clear the jam.
The traffic returned to normal later in the afternoon.
