THANE: A high-profile doctor from Rabodi area in Thane, who had sought a loan of Rs40 lakh, ended up being conned of Rs2.33 lakh. The police, who traced the call to Gurgaon in Haryana, have booked five — identified as Anushka Sharma, Shekhar Malhotra, Avinash Singh, Samar Anand and Saurabh Saxena — for cheating the woman.

According to the police, Ruma Amol, 34, a resident of Vrindavan Society in Rabodi, in received the first call in November 2014. The caller assured her of a Rs40 lakh loan and asked her to deposit Rs2.33 lakh in different accounts, which she did in three installments. “She deposited the first installment of Rs40,000 in favour of City Club and the other two installments of Rs85,000 and Rs1,08,000 were made in favour of Value Edit Card. The three transactions were completed by December 2014,” said a police officer.

“The accused demanded more cash. The woman suspected something amiss as her loan wasn’t being cleared. She asked for a return, but did not get any response. Eventually, she approached the police on Wednesday,” added the officer.

“The complainant gave us the calls details, which we traced to addresses in Delhi and Gurgaon,” said KG Chavan, senior police inspector, Rabodi police station.
