A 43-year-old au­torick­shaw driver died in a hit-and-run accident at Turbhe on Wed­nes­day night.

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, Na­gen­dra Sonkam­ble, a res­i­dent of Turbhe Naka, was on his way to Vashi from Turbhe in his au­torick­shaw around 10pm. While cross­ing the Turbhe Bridge, Sonkam­ble’s au­torick­shaw was hit by an un­known ve­hi­cle mov­ing in the same di­rec­tion.

“The vic­tim suf­fered in­juries on his head. He was rushed to the civic hos­pi­tal in Vashi by fel­low mo­torists, but he died there af­ter an hour,” said an of­fi­cer from the APMC po­lice sta­tion.

The po­lice are on the look­out for the driver of ve­hi­cle that hit the au­torick­shaw.

“There were no CCTV cam­eras in the area where the accident took place and no one saw the reg­is­tra­tion num­ber of the ve­hi­cle. Our of­fi­cials are look­ing for the driver at dif­fer­ent places,” said the of­fi­cer.

A case un­der sec­tions 279, 304a of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC) and sec­tions 184 and 134 of the Mo­tor Ve­hi­cles Act has been reg­is­tered against the driver.

The po­lice handed over the body to his fam­ily af­ter the post-mortem. The post-mortem re­port is awaited.
