VET­ERAN CPI LEADER AB BARD­HAN PASSES AWAY

NEW DELHI: For­mer gen­eral sec­re­tary of the Com­mu­nist Party of In­dia and a doyen of In­dia’s Left­ist move­ment, AB Bard­han, 92, passed away here on Satur­day. He was ad­mit­ted to GB Pant hos­pi­tal here af­ter suf­fer­ing a par­a­lytic stroke last month.

Prime Min­is­ter Naren­dra Modi tweeted, “Will al­ways re­mem­ber Shri AB Bard­han as a pas­sion­ate Com­mu­nist, fully com­mit­ted to his ide­ol­ogy & prin­ci­ples.”

Congress pres­i­dent So­nia Gandhi de­scribed him as “one who cham­pi­oned the cause of dis­pos­sessed and the marginalised through­out his life.”

The vet­eran leader, a key strate­gist in coali­tion pol­i­tics, is sur­vived by son Ashok and daugh­ter Alka. An ar­chi­tect of the UPA 1, Bard­han was known for his blunt speak and in­tegrity.
