Thane man held for cheating 37 people with ‘investment scheme’
THANE: A 48- year- old man was arrested on Friday for allegedly duping around 37 people of around Rs1.72 lakh by promising them lucrative returns, while claiming to invest the amount in a ‘government scheme’.
The arrested accused has been identified as Nanoo alias Dnyaneshwar Moreshwar Ambre, 48, a street-food seller.
Ambre is one of the two men who lured people in the city by promising huge returns on their investment in a ‘ government scheme’, Inspector MD Suryavanshi of Bazarpeth police station said.
The victims, most of whom were senior citizens, deposited Rs1.72 lakh into the scheme pro- moted by the duo. When they did not get their returns, the people realised that they had been cheated, and approached the police, the inspector said.
Based on the complaints by the victims, Ambre was arrested.
A case under section 420 ( cheating) read with 34 ( acts done by several persons in fur- therance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, has been registered against the duo.
A hunt is on to nab the other accused.
Police have undertaken a drive to create awareness among citizens to desist from investing in such spurious schemes, Suryavanshi said.
