The water in the creek beside the stretch between Purshottam Petrol Pump and Kharghar Toll Naka on the Sion-Panvel highway has turned black in the past few days.

Local residents are demandi ng t hat t he Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) t ake i mmediate corrective action.

Kasadi river, which flows through Taloja MIDC area, meets the creek. Treated water from Taloja effluent treatment plant is released into the creek through a pipeline.

Shrikant Mhatre, a local resident, said, “It seems that some companies have been releasing untreated water into the creek. The residents of Kalamboli regu- larly speak of getting a strong stench and also a burning sensation in the eyes.”

He alleged, “There are also instances of chemical tankers unloading poisonous chemicalladen water in the river that flows along Taloja bypass road.”

Locals say that the residents of Kalamboli, Navde and other neighbouring villages, are the worst-affected by the pollution.

Nagesh Lohalkar, regional officer of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board ( MPCB), said, “We have taken note of the pollution of the creek water, and are holding discussions about it. Soon measures will be taken to curb it.”

He said, “We will also check if there is any negligence at the Taloja effluent treatment plant. Strict action will be taken if that is found to be the case.”
