MUMBAI: An 18-year-old college student slipped and fell into the sea while taking a selfie near the Bandra Fort at Bandstand on Saturday. Both the girl and a passer-by, who jumped in to save her, are feared to have drowned, with a joint operation of the fire brigade, the police and the Indian coast guard failing to locate them till late in the night.

At the time of going to press, the police had sent in boats with local fishermen and expanded their search area till Mahim.

Tarannum Ansari was with two of her friends, Anjum Khan and Masturi Khan. Eyewitnesses recount seeing the girls standing at the edge of a rocky patch near the fort taking selfies, when all three slipped and fell in around 11am.

Ramesh Walunj, 40, a driver, who heard their cries for help, left his belongings on the rocks and dived in to save them. He managed to bring two of them — Anjum and Masturi — ashore, but was swept away by waves when he went in for Tarannum.
