THANE: The Thane police on Thursday arrested a truck driver who filed a police complaint saying he had been robbed of steel rods worth Rs16 lakh. The police found he had staged the robbery.

The police arrested his helper and six men. The truck driver was identified as Ramdayal Choudhary, and his helper as Mohammad Rafik. On January 1, a man named Devram Bishnoi hired Choudhary’s truck, asking him to collect steel rods from a Bhiwandi godown and to shift them to Kalamboli. On January 2, Choudhary filed a complaint that the steel rods were robbed. He said their truck was stopped by four or five men. They tied the driver and his helper and left with the truck.

“When we interrogated the driver and the helper separately, the truth came out. They had kept all the material at a godown near Taloja village. They were helped by six other men,” said a police officer.
