San­jay Dhaigude, deputy RTO, Navi Mum­bai, said, “The Supreme Court com­mit­tee on road safety, headed by Jus­tice KS Rad­hakr­ish­nan, had asked the gov­ern­ments of all states to take ‘stern ac­tion against vi­o­la­tors and ex­er­cise dis­cre­tion un­der Sec­tion 19 of the Mo­tor Ve­hi­cles Act, 1988 by pass­ing an or­der dis­qual­i­fy­ing the of­fender from hold­ing a driv­ing li­cense for a spec­i­fied pe­riod.’”

He said, “The of­fences that now at­tract sus­pen­sion of li­cence for a pe­riod of three months in­clude speed­ing, jump­ing a red light, over­load­ing of goods ve­hi­cle, car­ry­ing pas­sen­gers in goods ve­hi­cle, drink driv­ing and speak­ing on mo­bile phone while driv­ing.”

Traf­fic po­lice speak

Deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (traf­fic) Arvind Salve, said, “We have formed two spe­cial squads of traf­fic po­lice that have been at­tached to Navi Mum­bai RTO as only RTO of­fi­cials have the right to sus­pend li­cences.”
