Turbhe to get two foot overbridges
The general body of NMMC on Wednesday approved construction of two foot overbridges taking into account the increased number of commuters on Thane-Belapur Road and the accidents taking place there. The FOBs will be constructed on the road opposite Turbhe railway station.
In November last year, 32-year-old Kirandevi Rajak and her three- year- old child were killed in an accident after being hit by a container. They were crossing the road to go to the railway station from Turbhe Store. This had led to protests in the area by residents.
City engineer Mohan Dagaonkar had then assured that the civic body will finalise plan for the foot overbridge at the earliest.
The proposal was brought
in the general body meeting on Wednesday. Dagaonkar said, “The FOBs will cost around Rs3,12,92,000. The FOB, will be 32m long and 2m wide.
He said: “We will construct 2 FOBs in the area.”
Explaining the reason for the delay, city engineer Mohan Dagaonkar said: “At the time of construction of the Thane Belapur road, a flyover had been planned at Turbhe Store. But, due to the opposition by locals it was not constructed.”
He added, “For a skywalk to be constructed, three roads — KKR Road, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and ThaneBelapur road — have to be considered.”
Thane-Belapur Road has become accident-prone as there are no foot overbridges.
