A 42-year-old man was arrested by the Taloja police on Tuesday for allegedly illegally dredging sand at a creek in their jurisdiction.

Five others, who were also involved in the incident, managed to flee and the police are now searching for them.

According to the police, a group of six men dredging sand near the creek at Taloja village around 4.30pm. They did not have any official permission for doing so.

Acting on a tip-off, the police along with tehsildar officials raided the place and arrested Abdul Raut Patel, a resident of Taloja.

“The others managed to flee before we reached. We have recovered several plastic pipes, sand worth Rs45,000 and other equipment worth Rs10,000 from the spot,” said an officer from Taloja police station.

The accused was produced before the judicial court on Wednesday and has been remanded in police custody.

The police have not found any criminal record against him so far.

“The main culprits, who deploy the labourers for dredg- ing sand, are mostly outsiders and they never come to the spots,” said a police officer.

“Usually, they hire labourers who don’t know much about the city. Migrant Bangladeshis seem to be their first preference, as they are ready to work for lower wages compared to Indian labourers. Such rackets are strong in areas such as Pen, Roha, Uran and Mahad among others,” he added.
