ROAD SAFETY WEEK ENDS ON A COLOURFUL NOTE
The Navi Mumbai traffic department organised the closing ceremony of the road safety week at the police headquarters at Kalamboli on Friday. School students, activists and members of NGOs and many other residents attended the programme, which was inaugurated by actor Shreyas Talpade. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Arvind Salve, deputy commissioner of police (zone 1) Shahaji Umap and other senior police officers were present. Addressing the crowd, Salve said, “The road safety week we organised this year, has been a great success.” Sensitising the people about road safety, Talpade said, “Thousands of people die every year in our country in road accidents. If we do not violate traffic norms, the roads will be safe and the numbers of casualties will come down too.” The traffic department organised competitions, bike and car rallies and seminars. Elderly people were also spotted distributing advisories. They have also been accompanied by a ‘yamdoot’ whose duty is to ‘take care’ of the people after their death. “We focussed on a few areas such as Palm Beach Road, Nerul and Belapur , New Panvel among others. We will conduct surveys to find out the areas that need more police personnel,” said Salve. —
