ROAD SAFETY WEEK ENDS ON A COLOUR­FUL NOTE

The Navi Mum­bai traf­fic depart­ment or­gan­ised the clos­ing cer­e­mony of the road safety week at the po­lice head­quar­ters at Kalam­boli on Fri­day. School stu­dents, ac­tivists and mem­bers of NGOs and many other res­i­dents at­tended the pro­gramme, which was in­au­gu­rated by ac­tor Shreyas Tal­pade. Deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (traf­fic) Arvind Salve, deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (zone 1) Sha­haji Umap and other se­nior po­lice of­fi­cers were present. Ad­dress­ing the crowd, Salve said, “The road safety week we or­gan­ised this year, has been a great suc­cess.” Sen­si­tis­ing the peo­ple about road safety, Tal­pade said, “Thou­sands of peo­ple die ev­ery year in our coun­try in road ac­ci­dents. If we do not vi­o­late traf­fic norms, the roads will be safe and the num­bers of ca­su­al­ties will come down too.” The traf­fic depart­ment or­gan­ised com­pe­ti­tions, bike and car ral­lies and sem­i­nars. El­derly peo­ple were also spot­ted dis­tribut­ing ad­vi­sories. They have also been ac­com­pa­nied by a ‘yam­doot’ whose duty is to ‘take care’ of the peo­ple af­ter their death. “We fo­cussed on a few ar­eas such as Palm Beach Road, Nerul and Belapur , New Pan­vel among oth­ers. We will con­duct sur­veys to find out the ar­eas that need more po­lice per­son­nel,” said Salve. —
