Se­nior ci­ti­zen robbed of gold chain while board­ing ST bus

NAVI MUM­BAI: A se­nior ci­ti­zen was robbed of her gold chain worth Rs25,000 at the State Trans­port bus de­pot on Fri­day.

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, Leela Pawar, 62, a res­i­dent of Lonivli­vadi vil­lage, was head­ing home from the town.

While she was board­ing the bus at the de­pot, an uniden­ti­fied per­son who was loi­ter­ing in the area, snatched the gold chain and ran away. “The woman shouted for help, but the peo­ple at the de­pot could not get hold of the cul­prit,” said a po­lice of­fi­cer from Pan­vel city po­lice sta­tion.

The po­lice have booked the ac­cused un­der sec­tion 392 (pun­ish­ment for rob­bery) of the In­dian Pe­nal Code. “We are now in­ves­ti­gat­ing the case and hope ar­rest the ac­cused soon,” the of­fi­cer said.

The in­ci­dent high­lighted the poor safety mea­sures of ST bus de­pots. “The pa­thetic con­di­tion of Pan­vel ST de­pot is a cause of con­cern for the past sev­eral months. Pas­sen­gers, es­pe­cially se­nior cit­i­zens, find it tough to take care of their be­long­ings,” said Amitabh Bose, 46, a res­i­dent of Pan­vel.
